Campaign Notes Session: 0

Not a lot of notes on this initial campaign notes.

Jessey decided he wanted the group to know each other before beginning, so he rolled on the backgrounds table to try and force some ideas on how we came to be a group.

Personally, I had most of my back story prepared.

Early on Harry was an apprentice to a local wizard who was seen as the town’s guardian. One day some high end bandits come to town and end up getting Harry’s wizard guardian killed. Harry, gets ahold of the wizard’s spell book and is able ot drive them off. He then sets out to learn as much as he can in order to protect those who can’t protect themselves, and that’s Harry’s story.

Jessey came up with a few background details.

Shared backgrounds:

  1. A Male, lawful evil dragonborn monk named Hirrathak Mystan has gone missing. We have some connection to him. Stephen and Andrew like the idea that he was a master at their initial dojo.

  2. We committed a crime, burglary, at some point. We did commit the crime, but were found not guilty. We think this may have something to do with background #3.

  3. We spent time working for a politician named Gilardo Calaf. The experience ended negatively. We think he was corrupt and had us break into town hall, kind of in a Watergate hotel situation.

  4. We went on an adventure, but we came back with some scars. I think I am going to give Hary some scaring on his hands. It happened in the Dreden Files series so it also is a bit in character for the person I made.

I am playing Hary Blackston, human Wizard. Andrew is playing Korddar Ublataar, the giant Monk. And Stephen is playing Krauthes Vokvuhtaan, also a monk, not sure what race he went with.

We rolled for our stats. That was something I’ve never done before, always sticking with point buy. I rolled, in order, a 16, 13, 14, 11, 12, and 15. I am honestly beyond impressed with the dice rolls here. I think Andrew also had some good rolls, and Stephen’s was so bad that he ended up going with point buy.

Other than making characters, we learned about Diathora, the town/city in which the majority of the campaign is expected to take place.

Here’s the little we learned about the barrows of Diathora.

Tiller’s end: south, farming, poor, landlord greed
Silver St: Central, East to West, long street, shops
Soot Stained Row: east, industrial, overlooks sea

Luminarium: West? Magical studies, worldly buildings

There wasn’t too much going on in this first session. Andrew and I also went half each on building a small one room building on the land we had gotten in the one shot. The current one day plan is to turn this into a bastion.

Overall the hype was not lived up to. We mostly talked and hung out for the majority of the session, only spending maybe an hour in game this time. For my part I did not come ready to play, only ot make a character, which is what I did. Now that I am fully ready to play I expect next week will bring in something of interest to get us going.

I feel like starting campaign is always the hardest part. There’s a lot of “what would you like to do?” and no a lot of ideas on what I could be doing. I think for the next session I will mention wanting to study at the Luminarium, that seems like something Hary would be into.

I have included a picture of Diathora below, Jessey is trying out World Anvil, and so I am also going to try it out and see how the sites works.
